Is Rick Warren ignoring sin in search for 'peace'?

Tuesday, July 29, 2008 3 comments

The following is an article from 'One News Now'

Christian broadcaster and author Tom McMahon says evangelical pastor Rick Warren's belief that the church must take the lead in solving the world's problems of poverty, disease, and war cannot be reconciled with the scriptures.

Pastor Warren will be hosting an interfaith meeting next month with 30 Christian, Jewish, and Muslim leaders "to discuss cooperation for the common good of all Americans." Warren's P.E.A.C.E. plan mobilizes churches to address global problems. But McMahon, president of The Berean Call ministry, says the popular Christian author is introducing evangelical Christianity to the social gospel that he learned from his mentor, social scientist Peter Drucker.T.A. McMahon

"As a Christian, as a biblical Christian, I have real concerns about this because I don't find this in the scriptures," McMahon explains. "You see, it's true the world has all kinds of problems, but he's working on the symptoms and avoiding the root cause, which is the sin nature of humanity. So how can you work with all kinds of people [who are] called 'people of faith,' but it's not biblical faith?"

McMahon contends that only the biblical gospel can change the heart of man, and that Warren is compromising that by working with people who reject the gospel of Christ. He says that although Pastor Warren claims his life's calling is "to proclaim the gospel truth of salvation in Jesus Christ," it is doubtful that gospel will be proclaimed at the interfaith meeting.

"I believe that Rick has a low view of prophecy," McMahon contends. "Well, I think he needs to heed the words of Jesus [in Luke 18:8]: 'When the Son of Man cometh shall He find faith upon the earth?' Well, 'people of faith' yes, but certainly not the faith that Jude exhorts true believers to contend for."

The Lasting Affects of Immorality

Sunday, July 27, 2008 5 comments

We all know the story of God's judgment on Sodom and Gomorrah. Genesis 19 describes Lot's escape from the sinful cities. However, it is rarely talked about what happened after the escape.

Lot dwelt in a cave in the mountains (v 30). His daughters were so corrupted with immorality that they contrived to be impregnated by their own father.

Genesis 19:31-36

"Now the firstborn said to the younger, 'Our father is old, and there is no man on the earth to come in to us as is the custom of all the earth. Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him that we may preserve the lineage of our father.' So they made made their father drink wine that night. And the firstborn went in and lay with her father and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose. It happened on the next day that the firstborn said to the younger, 'Indeed I lay with my father last night; let us make him drink wine tonight also, and you go in and lie with him that we may preserve the lineage of our father.' Then they made their father drink wine that night also. And the younger arose and lay with him, and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose. Thus both the daughters of Lot were with child by their father."

The two sons born of incest became the progenitors of Moab and Ammon, Israel's longstanding enemies.

Questions:
Does an immoral society always take a long time to turn around?
Do you see America's morality declining?
How amazing is God's plan that Ruth was a Moabite, yet played such an important role?

Problems at the Ballpark

These issues are a little old, but I am still interested in peoples' opinions.

A lesbian complained that an usher at Safeco Field asked her to stop kissing her date because it was making another fan uncomfortable. "The women refused to modify their behavior, began swearing at the seating hosts and complained that they were being singled out for their sexual orientation," the club said. I find it hard to believe that they were not trying to cause a scene after reading this statement: "Guerrero denied she and her date were groping each other, saying that along with eating garlic fries, they were giving each other brief kisses." That is what everybody does, eats garlic fries and then makes out. Here is the rest of the article.

Would you have complained?
Do you think men set a double standard for lesbians vs gay males?

Christopher Ratte of Ann Arbor had taken his son to a Detroit Tigers game. He didn't notice the $7 lemonade he bought contained alcohol. A security guard noticed the boy drinking the spiked lemonade and called authorities. Leo was checked at a hospital. No trace of alcohol was found in his blood. No charges were filed against the father, who says it was a case of "massive overreaction." Their son Leo spent two days in state custody. The father spent nearly a week outside his home before he was allowed to return. Here is the full article.

Do you believe the father didn't know that there was alcohol?
Do you agree that the State overreacted?

Church Math

A church reported it had 28,000 conversions in a year, baptized 9,600 people, and had 123 join the church.

I am not advocating baptism or church membership for salvation, but do you find these numbers a problem?

Favre Comeback?

Monday, July 14, 2008 4 comments

Brett Favre now is talking about a comeback. Unfortunately the Green Bay Packers want to move on. I somewhat understand their frustration, but a new season has not started yet. I say let him come back. How can you deny someone that has brought so much to this franchise?

Some guys started a website and organize a weekly ralley outside Lambeau Field. They make a good point. Unlike any other professional sports team, the Green Bay Packers are owned by the community and stock holders. They are calling for Ted Thompson to be fired if he releases Brett Favre or trades him.

What do you think?

Witnessing

John MacArthur makes an illustration out of 2 Corinthians 4. He calls it "Paul's humble five-point strategy:

We wil not lose heart. We will not alter the message. We will not manipulate the results, because we understand that a profound spiritual reality is at work in those who do not believe. We will not expect popularity, and therefore, we will not be disappointed. And we will not be concerned with visible and earthly success but devote our efforts toward that which is eternal."

2 Corinthians 4

"(1) Therefore, since we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we do not lose heart. (2) But we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness nor handling the word of God deceitfully, but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God. (3) But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, (4) whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them. (5) For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus’ sake. (6) For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. Cast Down but Unconquered (7) But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. (8) We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; (9) persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed— (10) always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. (11) For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus’ sake, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. (12) So then death is working in us, but life in you. (13) And since we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, “I believed and therefore I spoke,”[a]we also believe and therefore speak,(14) knowing that He who raised up the Lord Jesus will also raise us up with Jesus, and will present us with you. (15) For all things are for your sakes, that grace, having spread through the many, may cause thanksgiving to abound to the glory of God. Seeing the Invisible (16) Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. (17) For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, (18) while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal."
