He constantly threatened the Israelites with curses if they didn't obey him; his support of them was entirely conditional.

Eventually, He got fed up with them and allowed foreigners to conquer them and haul them off as slaves. This is not "unconditional support".

Furthermore, the current incarnation of Israel is nothing like the Israel of antiquity. Israel was and is properly a kingdom, not a parliamentary republic. The rightful government of Israel is the current heir to the throne, not a bunch of elected officials. The current Israeli government is a usurper, both Biblically and historically.

For those interested in prophecy, I would add that Revelation refers to Israel by tribe - in other words, it's referring to ethnic Jews, not an Israeli government that rules over Jews and Gentiles alike. I remain unconvinced that the current Israeli government is the Israel of prophecy.

Finally, I think it's important to make the distinction between individual Jews and the Israeli government. Just as I can love my fellow Americans but hate my government, so can I love the Jews but hate the Israeli government.Tritonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08881747667052152482noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3579381765450411966.post-7423895308075922492009-02-17T09:05:00.000-05:002009-02-17T09:05:00.000-05:00First off, I must confess that I didn't read the e...First off, I must confess that I didn't read the entire article, though I skimmed it enough to get the basic gist....

As for me personally, I've always felt a kindred spirit towards the Jews, much like a family member would his unbelieving relatives. Whether they are currently following Christ or not, they are God's chosen people, and I do think we as Christians should support them. It's almost as if we are the adopted members of the family of God, they are the birth members, and even though we believe and they have strayed from the truth, we must still support them whenever possible, and trust God to work in their hearts in His timing.

The word "unconditional" is rather broad, and I hesitate to say I support anything unconditionally. However, in the broadest sense of the word, I do support Israel in their current offensive against the Palestinians, and I believe that it's pretty clear that while both peoples are unbelievers, the Palestinians are pretty much enemies of the one true God, and sworn enemies of his people. That makes them the "bad guys" in my book, and I would have no problem with Israel completely removing them from Palestine and reclaiming that area for themselves.

Maybe I'm wrong in having such a dogmatic stance on the matter, but it's always been my gut feeling that supporting Israel against those that oppose them is the right way to go. So I will continue to do so, even as the world increases their displeasure with them for their recent offensive.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3579381765450411966.post-82441485609254701572009-02-15T22:32:00.000-05:002009-02-15T22:32:00.000-05:00"and do whatever possible to fulfill prophecy"I ha..."and do whatever possible to fulfill prophecy"

I have to disagree with you on that. God can use us, but he doesn't need us. To do something in hopes to fulfill prophesy is not a good reason for me. There could be many mistakes if we try to do things on our time. God will fulfill them when He deems so.

I can see your point on the rest of it, but like Steve said, unconditionally is a different story. Israel is not perfect. I support Israel, but I would be hesitant to say unconditionally.Craighttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13224971120936180596noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3579381765450411966.post-22561263031771120722009-02-15T16:17:00.000-05:002009-02-15T16:17:00.000-05:00:) Sorry, I was in a hurry at the time of commenti...:) Sorry, I was in a hurry at the time of commenting.

First and foremost, we have Biblical examples of countries that have not supported the Jewish people, and look at what God says about them, in Zechariah 2.

Then we can look to Genesis 12:2&3, when God first called Abram:

2 "I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you."

Even Paul talks about our (gentiles) debt to the Jews in Romans 15 (20 something).

Steve Martin might tell you that only Christ is to be supported unconditionally, however God has told us to support the Jewish state.

We should look forward to the return of Christ, and do whatever possible to fulfill prophecy, we should be so blessed to play a part.Laynehhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12549086508777531754noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3579381765450411966.post-3071445040326350222009-02-15T01:01:00.000-05:002009-02-15T01:01:00.000-05:00I don't think Christians ought support anything un...I don't think Christians ought support anything unconditionally...except Christ.

Israel is great!
