The Story of Horatio G. Spafford & His Famous Hymn

Thursday, August 16, 2007 5 comments

I am not sure if anyone has heard this story before, but it is worth repeating. The words to this hymn were written after two major traumas in Spafford's life. The first was the Great Chicago Fire of October 1871, which ruined him financially. Shortly after, while crossing the Atlantic, all four of Spafford's daughters died in a collision with another ship. Spafford's wife Anna survived and sent him the now famous telegram: "SAVED ALONE." Several weeks later, as Spafford's own ship passed near the spot where his daughters died, he was inspired to write these words.

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blessed assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul.
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

    Wow. I had never hearfd that story. It's amazing to get some of the background on hymns that I've known all my life. It gives them a whole new meaning. Thanks.

    I love that hymn and the story behind it is amazing. It really puts things into perspective. We often think that we struggle and yet a man who has lost everything still praises our Father because he knows ultimately God is the only one who will never leave us. He is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Thanks for reminding all of us.

    WARNING TO ALL CHRISTIANS!
    THIS MAY SURPRISE YOU.
    This is a great story but theres a lot about this story that people don't know. After Spafford reunited with his wife they went on to Jerusalem where they started a Orginization that helped the poor. But later they became what they called the "Overcomers" they began to practice cult like practices. and at the age of 60, in 1888 spafford died under the dillusion that he was the Messiah. Don't believe me? One of spafford's descendents even wrote a book on it.
